The Department of Veterans Affairs has issued an interim final rule to confirm that its health care professionals may practice their health care profession consistent with the scope and requirements of their VA employment, notwithstanding any State license, registration, certification, or other requirements that unduly interfere with their practice. Specifically, this rulemaking confirms VA’s current practice of allowing VA health care professionals to deliver health care services in a State other than the healthcare professional’s State of licensure, registration, certification, or other State requirement, thereby enhancing beneficiaries’ access to critical VA healthcare services. Regeneron antibody trials show 57% decrease in medical visits associated with ambulatory COVID-19 patients

Source: Reuters 10/28/2020 By Michael Erman

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has reported that its coronavirus antibody cocktail - the experimental treatment that U.S. President Donald Trump received - significantly reduced medical visits in a trial of nearly 800 patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. Regeneron said patients given the treatment, REGN-COV2, made around 57% fewer COVID-19 related medical visits than those given a placebo over a 29 day period. The drop was around 72%in patients with one or more risk factors such as being over age 50, obesity, cardiovascular, metabolic, lung, liver or kidney disease, or an immuno- compromised status. Last month, the company released early data from the trial showing the treatment reduced viral levels and improved symptoms in non-hospitalizedCOVID-19 patients. Broward Health partners with AccessDX to tailor prescriptions to patient genes

Two people who outwardly seem alike can take the same medication at the same dose but get different results. For one, the treatment is successful, but for the other it fails to work. In many cases, the the reason for this difference lies hidden within their genes. Variations in specific genes can affect how quickly a medication is broken down inside a person’s body, making therapeutics more or less potent, affecting how well they work. Consortium member Broward Health is partnering with AccessDX to offer state-of-the-art genomic testing for medication management, beginning in November. This kind of testing looks for genetic variations that affect medication response. It helps providers choose the right medication and the right dose for a patient’s genetic makeup, which may lead to better results. Please click here to read more.

Cross Country Healthcare offers guide to efficient credentialing in the pandemic surge

As the healthcare industry braces for a “twindemic” collision of COVID-19 plus the flu this winter, healthcare executives will be challenged with the compound problems of staffing and credentialing. To help healthcare leaders address this challenge, Consortium member Cross Country Healthcare has published a useful article, “Righting the Credentialing Process in an Upside-Down World.” The article discusses the difficulty of threading the needle between “just in time” credentialing and licensure in order to quickly deploy desperately needed caregivers and ensuring that compliance and other safeguards are being met. According to Hank Drummond, Chief Clinical Officer at Cross Country Healthcare, “Organizations don’t need to make credentialing more complicated than what they need. In a national emergency, we have to keep our heads focused on patient needs and suspend some of the things we would normally do in a thorough credentialing and privileging process.” Drummond advises healthcare organizations to find expedited paths for credentialing of medical staff. Among his recommendations are: Consider exceptions to some of the usual credentialing guidelines; Identify and establish minimal credential requirements; Establish rules for ongoing engagement and communication; Roll out the red carpet when welcoming new travel or contract staff; and Implement strong reporting practices and tracking.
