"We realized months ago that students would not be able to make in person visits as in years past so we convened our public school system partners and representatives of our host locations and got to work on a program that could be delivered to students during regularly scheduled class times," remarked Chamberlain College of Nursing president and Consortium director W. Jason Dunne, DNP, MN, RN,CNE who is chairing the DITLOAN Planning Committee this year.  Dr. Dunne added, "As in years past the program will provide high school and middle school students a greater understanding of the wide range of career opportunities available to those in the nursing profession. and of what it is like to be a nurse in a variety of settings, as well as instruction on how to become a nurse.  Our traditional host locations have embraced the challenge. Many are re-purposing orientation, onboarding, and other training content and simulation scenarios with recorded debriefing sessions, and some are producing new content to meet the specific DITLOAN program goals."  "Our staff has enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to assume the on-camera nurse roles, the role of patients and even serve as extras", remarked Simone Cheong the Magnet Project Manager at West Kendall Baptist Hospital which has written and is producing a video showing nurse roles as a patient moves through the emergency department, pre-op, surgery, post-op, ICU, med surge and is discharged with a plan of treatment.  This year's program will be offered to South Florida public and private schools the week of November 9 - 13.

McKinsey & Company sees continued growth of ambulatory care and a significant opportunity for healthcare systems

A recent article by McKinsey & Company based on analysis of commercial claims data and doctor surveys, says that ambulatory care is one of the fastest-growing and highest-margin segments of the healthcare industry. The report points out that COVID-19 accelerated the interest in ambulatory care which began long before the pandemic for several reasons. Although hospital care is still the largest segment of the healthcare market overall, McKinsey anticipates that ambulatory care will have a disproportionate share of growth in the coming years. The research also noted that a wide variation exists in the use of ambulatory or outpatient care. This variation represents value to patients in cost and time. It also represents value to healthcare systems in cost and capital invested in bed stock and acute facilities that could be redeployed. Please click here to read more

Florida Task Force releases final recommendations for re-opening long-term care facilities

Florida’s Task Force on the Safe and Limited Re-opening of long-term care facilities has issued its final recommendations to help residents at these facilities  safely reconnect with their families. The Task Force held a total of five publicly-broadcasted meetings in August, where they developed and discussed the guidelines and recommendations outlined in their report. Following are the finalized recommendations:

  • Allow visitation in long-term care facilities for Essential Caregivers and Compassionate Care visitors. These individuals provide important care and support to residents of long term facilities, like bathing, feeding and emotional support.
  • Allow general resident outdoor and indoor visitation if the facility meets certain indicators of low virus risk.
  • Each visitation scenario must be accompanied by facility policies and procedures that support the safety of all residents and visitors. Policies and procedures must address appropriate training and mandatory use of masks and other infection control protections, including screening and visitor scheduling and management. The trial will enroll up to 60,000 volunteers across three continents and will study the safety and efficacy of a single vaccine dose versus placebo in preventing COVID-19. The company anticipates the first batches of a COVID-19 vaccine to be available for emergency use authorization in early 2021, if proven to be safe and effective.  Please click here to read more.

Huron research shows shift in management priorities for healthcare leaders

New research from the Huron consulting group shows that in a matter of months, the coronavirus pandemic has materially shifted leaders’ priorities and accelerated investments in specific areas focused on financial stability, pandemic management and changes to care delivery. The challenges of COVID-19are changing how healthcare organizations operate as well as consumer expectations and preferences for their care. Short-term adjustments have been necessary for organizations to continue delivering care safely while stabilizing financially. At the same time, leaders are not abandoning long-term strategic plans for transformation of care, cost, technology and an overall rethinking of how healthcare is delivered. Huron’s research finds that 66% of executives’ short-term plans and 77% of executives’ long-term plans will remain mostly unchanged. What will change is a re-prioritization or acceleration of certain elements of their strategies. Please click here to read more.
