Large U.S. employers looking to increase onsite
clinics and other healthcare services according to BGH study
In its annual survey of U.S. businesses, the national Business Group on Health found that large U.S. employers are planning to expand onsite clinics and other employee healthcare services next year and beyond. Although the pandemic caused many employees to work at home, more employers are adapting to meet future challenges by providing onsite clinics for COVID-19 testing, virtual counseling and other health concerns, including mental health and emotional well-being. 72% either have a clinic in place or will by 2023. CDC urges public to get flu vaccination for 2020
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has released its recommendations for the 2020-2021 flu season, which recommend flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older. The CDC expects this season’s flu vaccines to include inactivated, recombinant and live attenuated vaccines, including two new vaccines expected to produce a better immune response in people aged 65 years and older. The CDC says that getting a flu vaccine this year is particularly important because the viruses that cause flu and COVID-19 might spread at the same time this fall and winter. Getting a flu vaccine helps reduce the amount of flu disease and symptoms that may be confused with COVID-19 and it also helps reduce stress on the U.S. healthcare system. McKinsey & Company advises healthcare systems to adopt proactive, targeted growth to face financial challenge of COVID-19 future
According to a new report by McKinsey & Company healthcare systems expect to continue suffering negative financial pressure from the impact of COVID-19, even after accounting for federal and state funding. While health systems have ramped-up capacity to handle COVID-19 cases and incurred additional costs to procure PPEs and operationalize surge capacity plans, they also have suffered declines of up to 70 percent in surgical volume and 60 percent in emergency department traffic. More than 90 percent indicate that COVID-19 will have a negative financial impact despite government funding programs. Baptist Health South Florida has created the “Baptist Health Mask Challenge” by teaming up with several local leaders and celebrities to inspire the community to continue wearing masks. For months, Baptist Health and others have urged the public to wear masks as one of the primary ways to curb the spread of COVID-19. Now, Baptist Health is driving that message home in a more personal and unique way. Awards
Two NCSF member hospitals, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Regional Hospital, were recently honored with Gold Level Awards for Excellence in Life Support from the ELSO (Extracorporeal Life Support Organization). The Memorial Healthcare System is the only healthcare system in Broward County that provides Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), to patients of all ages. ECMO is a treatment that uses a pump to circulate blood through an artificial lung back into the bloodstream of a very ill patient and is one of the most advanced forms of life support available to patients experiencing acute failure of the cardio-respiratory system. |

Many nursing homes and assisted living facilities face imminent closure due to financial strain of COVID-19, says survey by AHCA/NCAL Source: Fierce Healthcare, 08/24/2020. by Tina Reed
A recent survey of long-term care providers by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) and National Center for Assisted Living(NCAL), shows that the majority of nursing homes (72% of respondents) and assisted living facilities (64% of respondents) cannot sustain another year of operating under the current pace of increased costs and revenue losses. 40% of the nursing homes said they cannot keep operating another six months under present conditions of increasing costs and revenue losses. 93% of nursing homes reported government funding is extremely or very important to help with COVID-related losses for their facility. The Trump administration announced in July that it was allocating an additional $5 billion in COVID-19 relief funds to Medicare-certified long-term care facilities and state veteran nursing homes in hot spots. |
NIH establishes Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded 11 grants valued at $17 million this year to establish the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID). The global network will involve multidisciplinary investigations into how and where viruses and other pathogens emerge from wildlife and spillover to cause disease in people. NIAID intends to provide approximately $82 million over five years to support the network. NAID Director Anthony S. Fauci said that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic serves as a potent reminder of the devastation that can be wrought when a new virus infects humans for the first time. The CREID network will enable early warnings of emerging diseases wherever they occur, which will be critical to rapid responses. The knowledge gained through this research will increase preparedness for future outbreaks. Asthma and Allergy Foundation offers latest COVID19 and
Asthma Toolkit for schools
The average American classroom of 30 students will have about three students with asthma, and teachers and staff are among the 19 million adults in the U.S. that have asthma. As schools reopen, creating a more asthma-friendly environment may help students and staff better control their asthma and help reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Since increased cleaning to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus can actually expose students and staff to more asthma triggers, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has created the COVID-19 and Asthma Toolkit for Schools. This resource is a supplement to current district, state and federal reopening guidelines. |

Nocion testing new inhaled treatment for cough that could
help fight COVID-19
Nocion Therapeutics has started clinical trials of NOC-100, an inhaled medication that has the potential to treat both chronic and acute cough – the latter a common symptom in patients with COVID-19 and associated with transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Curbing patient coughs could help in multiple ways. It would not only treat the symptoms but can also help reduce the spread of the disease between patients, hospital staff, family or other contacts.
